There are many examples that show it is possible to protect critical habitat, promote traditional land uses that operate under best management practices for the conservation of natural resources, and maintain a local economy that is nurtured and strengthened by the pastoral and scenic values that draw so many people to the West. It takes strong conservation measures, sustainable land management practices, and committed organization to resist suburban sprawl and development pressure in the arid Southwest, particularly in a riparian ecosystem.
The Lower San Pedro Watershed Alliance was formed to promote collaborative conservation among groups, agencies, and individuals who care about protecting this important natural desert river ecosystem the watershed that supports it. If you are concerned about the rapid loss of riparian habitat in our state and agree with the purpose of the Alliance, as described above, please join with us.
As threats to the Lower San Pedro ramp up, so does our need for both volunteers and possible future Board members with skills. While our membership includes more than 100 local landowners along the lower San Pedro and area residents, our volunteers also hail from other areas—in Tucson, northern Arizona, Phoenix, and across the country.
We are seeking volunteer expertise as we take on major threats to the health and sustainability of the San Pedro River Valley's wilderness and heritage lands. Do you, or anyone you know who is passionate about desert conservation, have experience in the following areas?

Membership does not require you to dedicate many hours of your time or make large financial contributions. Membership is an opportunity to join with others to leave a lasting conservation legacy in a state that is undergoing unusually rapid development.

Right now, we seek substantial funds for a new long-term study of the Groundwater Basins of the Lower San Pedro and the downstream portion of Aravaipa Canyon. The proposed Study will enable hydrologists, water managers and stakeholders to evaluate the impacts of groundwater development, as a linchpin of efforts to save the San Pedro.
According to hydrologist advisor Keith Nelson, "This knowledge would allow for the objective analysis of potential solutions, based on the best available science, in order to protect the Lower San Pedro and Aravaipa's extremely rare, desert base flow."

The Lower San Pedro Watershed Alliance (LSPWA) was granted Federal tax exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), under section 501 (c) (3) of the IRS code.
Contributions to the LSPWA, a public charity, are deductible under section 170 of the IRS code.
This status was granted by the IRS on October 9, 2014, and retroactively applies to all donations made to the LSPWA since its incorporation on June 21, 2013.
